News: Brazilian clubs all advance to last 16 of Copa Libertadores

Neymar eyes a place for Santos in the last 16 of the Copa Libertadores
The final round of group stage fixtures was completed last night with all five Brazilian clubs progressing into the round of sixteen.
On Tuesday night, Internacional recorded a 2-0 win in the Beira-Rio to comfortably win Group 6, whilst rivals Grêmio had already booked their place into the next round, finishing second in Group 2 last week. Cruzeiro, who also completed their fixtures last week, faced little challenge from their group opponents, winning Group 7 with a seven point margin.
Last night both Santos and Fluminense required wins to guarantee qualification. Santos overcame already eliminated Deportivo Táchira with a 3-1 win at the Vila Belmiro – the win will do no harm to the club’s ambitions to keep hold of star duo Neymar and Ganso.
Meanwhile in Buenos Aires, Fluminense – who started the day bottom of Group 3 – beat Argentinos Juniors 4-2 in a bad tempered game. The result was marred by ugly scenes at full time has fighting broke out amongst the two sides.
In the last 16, Cruzeiro face a difficult tie against Colombians Once Caldas as do Santos who face Mexican giants América. Fluminense face a difficult first leg in Paraguay against Libertad, whilst defending Libertadores champions Inter can set up a quarter-final clash with Grêmio if they can overcome Montevideo based Penarol and Chilean’s Universidad Catolica respectively.

Do you think that the lure of Copa Libertadores success will be enough for Santos to keep hold of Ganso and Neymar? More importantly perhaps, do you think that Santos have the money to keep their two young stars around for a little longer? Unless I’m mistaken they offered Neymar a vastly improved contract last year at a time when his departure for Chelsea seemed a certainty. With Elano back from Europe and rumours of Breno’s imminent arrival it would seem that Santos are hardly short of cash at present.
In the long term do you see a point coming when the top Brazilian clubs will be wealthy enough to effectively stem the haemorrhage of talent to Europe?

Good questions!
I think Ganso is as good as gone. He’ll leave in the summer transfer window, although it does leave him available for Santos to play throughout their entire Copa Libertadores campaign, with the finals played mid-June.
Still lots of speculation saying there is something in place between Santos and Chelsea regarding Neymar but these are, of course, just rumours. Although Santos did give Neymar a substantially improved contract last year, I believe the decision to remain in Brazil was taken with his own development being the major factor and refreshing, not financial gain.
There is definitely money around Santos (whether it’s the club’s or from investment groups/agencies working closely with the board) and even over the last few days it’s been suggested that Robinho could return to the club (again!) for next year’s centenary.
With regards to your final question, it’s very hard to give an answer as we need to consider the bigger picture as to why players move to Europe, such as socio-economic factors for example – which has little to do with the wealth of the individual clubs. What has been noticable of late however, is the growth of the Brazilian Real and the increasingly growing trend of players of other South American nationality transferring to Brazilian clubs of various levels. Currently, clubs are able to field three non-Brazilian players during domestic games and there is even an arguement to open this rule up to allow more foreigners. What impact this will make over the next 10-15 years remains to be seen.
In recent years, I think it’s fair to say that at club level, Brazilian football has become increasingly dominant in South America.
